goals
• Its objective is the formation of highly specialized human capital: (a) To form human capital through a study plan that includes highly specialized subjects consistent with the lines of research: Sustainability of agri-food systems; Development of high quality food: healthy, safe and with high organoleptic value; Optimization of agri-food processes.
(b) Provide the necessary scientific research to generate knowledge and add value to agri-food systems and derived products, based on high-impact scientific publications or with intellectual protection (variety registries, patents, etc.).
(c) Generate an instance for multidisciplinary research and innovation work, through the meeting of sciences related to the agri-food system. The foregoing through academic exchange and participation in multidisciplinary projects inside and outside the University and in contact with universities and national and international research entities.
Applicant Profile
The Program is aimed at people with a bachelor's or master's degree whose study plan is related to agri-food sciences.
Graduate profile
The graduate as Doctor in Agri-Food Sciences from the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso has academic training in accordance with the human and transcendent values that the University pursues. He is qualified to carry out research in an independent, autonomous and original way in the discipline. Its development in the areas of agri-food systems is based both on the general scientific culture and on the knowledge necessary for its specialization. The guided exercise of the above results in the development of critical thinking, independent scientific work and the rigorous application of the scientific method, essential constitutive elements of their academic level. In order for the above to be expressed to its maximum potential, the graduate is also capable of understanding and expressing himself in the English language, possesses communication skills both in the scientific field and with society at various levels and capacity for multidisciplinary teamwork.
Lines of investigation
As a general framework, the program is aimed at developing sustainable agri-food systems. In accordance with the objective of the program and with the orientation maintained by the academic units in the last 20 years, the focus of the research is concentrated on the development of scientific knowledge relevant to the sustainability of agri-food systems and is synthesized in three lines of research keys:
Sustainability of Agrifood Systems
This line includes the management and conservation of soil, water and plant resources. Recovery of degraded soils, evaluation, maintenance and development of biodiversity. It also includes sustainability aspects in the different stages of the production chain (from production to consumption).
Development of High Quality Food: Healthy, Safe and with high Organoleptic value
This line includes aspects of primary production (fruit growing, olericulture and floriculture, viticulture and oenology) and secondary food production.
Bioengineering of Agrifood Processes
This line includes the analysis, development and optimization of processes related to the generation of food for fresh or industrialized consumption.
