The authority of the Council of Rectors inaugurated this Tuesday the Seminar "University Admission and Selection in Chile: How to respond to the requirements and diversity of talents of the young people of the XXI century?", Organized by the Single Admission System of the CRUCH in conjunction with the University of Los Lagos.
On the occasion, the rector Aldo Valle highlighted the work agenda of five measures for the short and medium term, which seeks to introduce changes to the admission system and the University Selection Tests (PSU).
The executive vice president of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH), Rector Aldo Valle, affirmed that "we have a greater responsibility, because educational systems cannot simply consist of dispersed educational offers that do not have sufficient articulation."
These statements were made within the framework of the inauguration of the Seminar "University Admission and Selection in Chile: How to respond to the requirements and diversity of talents of the young people of the 21st century?", Organized by the Single Admission System ( SUA) of the CRUCH this Tuesday, April 23, at the Santiago Headquarters of the University of Los Lagos.
On the occasion, the rector Valle highlighted that this activity is developed in the context of the work agenda defined by the Council to introduce improvements in the university admission system in general and, in particular, to the University Selection Tests (PSU) . Valle emphasized the relevance of the admission system and stated that “when the reform of higher education was discussed, we always said that the admission system is a sensitive element, that it cannot be dealt with only bureaucratically (…) If it is a system public, it is very important that the institutions are duly represented, that there are balances between the State and civil society ”.
Therefore, in the opinion of the executive vice president of the Council of Rectors, "we have a duty to stop and look at our admission system and warn, promptly and with measure, that we must introduce changes that we need." It should be remembered that last week, the CRUCH agreed on a work agenda of five measures for the short and medium term, to introduce improvements in the university admission system and in the PSUs.
This plan includes incorporating a writing measurement into future admissions processes; study a proposal to improve the PSU of Mathematics; that the Department of Educational Evaluation, Measurement and Registration (DEMRE) report to higher education institutions more specific information on the performance of students in each of the areas included in the PSU of Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) ; commission an investigation into the uses and purposes of the USP, which helps to make explicit the intended and unintended uses of the scores; and to entrust the Committee of Experts with a specific proposal of instruments for the admission of those who come from technical-professional training, as well as instruments that raise the standards of equity of the system.
University admission and selection
The seminar organized by the SUA has the participation of rectors, academic authorities and researchers, who will debate in two sessions on initiatives to measure writing, innovation in evaluation and equity programs in Chilean universities, among other topics. This Tuesday the panels "Skills in the 21st century: Challenges for admission to higher university education" and "Admission and equity: Learning and challenges in Universities" were developed.
The activity continues this Wednesday, April 24 from 09.00 hours and its program includes two blocks. The first will discuss "National experiences and innovations in evaluation", while the second will present the 2019 Report of the SUA Committee of Experts regarding the proposals for changes to the USPs and around which the Council of Rectors defined the aforementioned work agenda of five measures.
This is the second initiative of its kind called by the SUA to discuss the admission processes. In May 2018, the Seminar "Challenges and new perspectives for university admission" was held, which discussed relevant aspects of the current admission system, as well as the challenges involved in creating the Access System contemplated in the Law Higher Education.
