This Wednesday, September 9, the webinar "Internationalization of the Curriculum: The path to teaching with an international seal" will be held, organized by the Internationalization Commission of the Council of Rectors, through its Internationalization at Home subcommittee, which will count as the main Speaker to the Director of Internationalization Projects of the University of Monterrey, Mexico, Brenda García.

This Wednesday, September 9, the webinar "Internationalization of the Curriculum: The road to teaching with an international seal" will be held, organized by the Internationalization Commission of the Council of Rectors, through its Internationalization at Home subcommittee, and which will count as the main Speaker with the Director of Internationalization Projects of the University of Monterrey, Mexico, Brenda García.

"The main objective of the seminar is to be able to install in the academic communities of the 30 universities of the Council of Rectors this particular issue of the Internationalization of the Curriculum, which is one of the most relevant dimensions of Internationalization at Home," said the president of the CRUCH Internationalization Commission and Director of Institutional Relations of the U. de Valparaíso, Alejandro Rodríguez. He added that in the current scenario "it is very important to find other paths for internationalization, and Internationalization at Home constitutes an opportunity to democratize the international experience and the formation of skills for global citizenship and multiculturalism."

In this context, Brenda García -who has 20 years of experience in the international education area and who currently coordinates both the intercultural skills training program and the Internationalization at Home activities-, will refer to the experience of the Universidad de Monterrey about the use of digital tools to facilitate the inclusion of all students in internationalization processes.

Internationalization at Home and Curriculum

According to Brenda García, the concept of Internationalization at Home was coined about twenty years ago. “Previously we talked about internationalization in a general way and many of the times we fall into the error that when we talk about internationalization of higher education, we only talk and think about mobility strategies, and it is not that. In itself, the internationalization of higher education is related to providing an international dimension to all the work of the institution, to all processes, activities and strategies. So, when we talk about Internationalization at Home, it is all the activities we do on campus with that international dimension ”. In this way, the research has an international dimension, as well as the teaching-learning processes and the extracurricular or training activities carried out by the students, to name a few.

For García, “if we want to focus on strategies of Internationalization at Home, the most important is the internationalization of the curriculum, since it directly affects the development of intercultural competencies, which will ultimately allow students to become better professionals and better people".

Finally, Brenda García considers that "we were very focused on mobility, but with the effects of Covid-19 there has been an awakening and other internationalization alternatives are beginning to be strengthened."

The webinar will be held between 11:30 am and 1:00 pm and will be broadcast live on the Facebook account of the Council of Rectors: https://www.facebook.com/consejoderectores

CRUCH approaches

It should be remembered that the CRUCH proposals to suspend the process focus on the fact that the model defined in the technical bases, in addition to not having been consulted with the regulated institutions, is valid for a homogeneous university system with institutions similar to each other, a situation that does not it happens in Chile, where institutions with different degrees of quality, selectivity and complexity coexist.

On the other hand, the model developed by the Undersecretariat of Higher Education is based only on historical accounting records, without considering future scenarios or financing improvements in quality and innovation, or variations in the context, such as the effects of the pandemic. .

In addition, the calculation of the tariff values was delivered to the institutions without sufficiently comprehensive information, making it impossible to carry out a complete analysis of the application of the model, or to verify and replicate the correct application of the provisions of the resolution.
