Consejo de Rectores de Universidades Chilenas se suma a los esfuerzos por alcanzar la paz social en La Araucanía

The Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities deeply regrets the disagreement and tension that the Region of La Araucanía is experiencing. This situation is largely explained by the historical inability of the Chilean State to recognize the cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes the basis of the identities that inhabit and enrich our territory.

In this context, CRUCH condemns the recent death of the young Mapuche Camilo Catrillanca and expresses its condolences to his family and community. Likewise, we hope that these facts are promptly investigated and clarified. For all the above, we are concerned about the lack of understanding and the installation of a climate of conflict and confrontation. We are sure that the country will advance towards a more culturally diverse and inclusive society, when it builds a space of recognition and collaboration based on historical truth and justice, eradicating all forms of violence and exclusion. Thousands of people who belong to the original peoples study and work in the institutions that make up the CRUCH, especially the Mapuche people.

Our institutions make permanent efforts throughout the country to contribute to the knowledge, respect and appreciation of native cultures, an extraordinary source of living and present cultural wealth. Therefore, we invite our communities to continue working to strengthen the multicultural dimension of university activities and contribute to the academic and social debate in this area.

As a Council, we join all efforts for social peace, which must be based on mutual recognition, dialogue and respect for the rights of all and all its inhabitants and communities.
